How to Treat People: Following God's royal law with all people
by Leith Anderson
Text: James 2:8-9
Topic: How to treat God's people
Big Idea: God wants us to love even those we dislike as much as we love ourselves.
Keywords: Partiality, Royal Law
Introduction
- How do we treat other people?
- James 2:8-9 says that if you love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing right.
Question one: Who sets the rules?
- God sets the rules, and Christians are the ones who have decided to keep them.
Question two: Do I want to do what's right?
- Sometimes, doing the right thing is very difficult.
- Christians are to do the right thing because they live for Jesus Christ.
The royal law
- The royal law is to love your neighbor as yourself, or to do what is in your neighbor's best interest.
- The word neighbor especially applies to those we are least likely to love.
- Illustration: In this brief illustration, Anderson tells of the "Million Dollar Highway," which was built using waste material from gold mines; highways are costly to build, but what makes this one costly is its makeup. Similarly, what makes the royal law costly to follow is the fact that it is made up of God's love.
What not to do
- James 2:9 says, "Don't break this royal law by showing favoritism."
- Illustration: Anderson tells of the measures his city took to keep drivers from illegally turning right on red at a particular traffic light; the public finally paid attention when the city parked a police car at the intersection. The city considered this law important, just as James considers his message against favoritism important.
- The best test is to ask ourselves, "Do I treat someone well because I expect to get something in return?"
