Introduction:
  • Illustration: "Humpty Dumpty" is an appropriate parable for our contemporary society.
  • Man is almost insanely committed to the proposition that he has all the answers.
-Illustration: Politicians continually promise to change things but lack the power to do it.
  • Our society is in need of Jesus' power to drastically change lives for the better.
Four characteristics of demonism
  • The first characteristic of demons is uncleanness.
-Illustration: This mirrors the growing prevalence of drug abuse, pornography, perversion, and obscenity in modern culture.
  • The second characteristic is isolation.
  • The third characteristic is superhuman strength.
  • The fourth characteristic is self-destruction.
Five crucial insights about demons
  • Demons recognize, and respond to, the name of Jesus.
  • Demons recognize, and respond to, the deity of Jesus.
  • Demons are afraid of their final destination—the abyss.
  • Demons are many, and become indistinguishable from those they torment.
  • Demons always fall under the control of Jesus.
There were two dramatically different responses to the power of Jesus
  • The townspeople rejected Jesus; they valued their swine more than God's work.
  • The demoniac was dramatically changed, and embraced Jesus.
  • This man also obeyed Jesus and became a witness for him.
Three final principles
  • This story demonstrates the power of Satan.
-This power is visible in the life of the demoniac before the miracle, and in the townspeople after.
    -Only God—not Satan—is all-powerful (1 John 4:4).
  • This story demonstrates the power of God.
-The life of the demoniac was dramatically, miraculously, changed.
-There is no life that Satan has ruined that God's power cannot restore.
  • This story demonstrates the power of witnessing.
-Evangelism is a gift given to specific believers; all believers are charged to be witnesses (Acts 1:8).
-Illustration: A young man becomes saved when he realizes that his congregation was saved out of sinful behavior (1 Corinthians 6:9).
-Witnesses tell others about what God has done in their lives, starting with their families.
Conclusion:
  • 1 John 1:10-12
  • Just like the demoniac and the townspeople, you have the choice to accept Jesus or to reject him.
