The Problem of Discrimination
by Howard Hendricks
Text: James 2:1-13
Topic: What God's attitude is toward discrimination
Big Idea: The only way we can reject discrimination, as James exhorts us to, is to make ourselves servants who care about others more than ourselves.
Keywords: Prejudice, Love, Servanthood
Introduction:
- There are all types of discrimination in the world today: economic, intellectual, sexual, political and racial, and age.
We are commanded not to show favoritism.
- The early church was not perfect in this: There is no perfect church.
- Illustration: Hendricks expands on the two men, one rich, one poor, who come to church and are treated differently.
- James says not to judge on the external.
Our values are not like God's values.
- If God doesn't discriminate on the basis of the material, why should we?
- Why do we scrape and bow before the rich who oppress us?
Favoritism defies the royal law of love.
- It's only when Jesus liberates us that we can be free from personal favoritism.
Discrimination is overcome by servant leadership.
- We need to remember John 13:3—servant leadership.
