Who Matters?
by Bill Hybels
Text: James 2:1-9
Topic: Why God loves everyone
Big Idea: God does not show partiality of any kind, and he wants us to adopt the same attitude toward one another.
Keywords: Partiality, Prejudice
Introduction
- James 2:1 says, "My brothers, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism."
- However, most of us have a list of desirables and undesirables in our heads.
Roots of favoritism
- Studies show that the two sources of prejudice are a person's parents and peer group.
Jesus heals a "nobody"
- In Mark 3, Jesus heals a handicapped man on the Sabbath to show the Pharisees that the man matters to God.
Jesus and women
- Jesus tells his disciples about a long conversation he has with a woman whom he leads to God, so they would know that women matter.
Religious favoritism
- Sometimes we look down our noses at those who are far from God, and isolate ourselves from them.
Three remarkable stories
- The stories of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the wayward son represent things lost that are valuable to their owners.
- The loss of all three treasures warrant an all-out search.
Everyone matters to God
- We have never seen anyone that does not matter to God, and they deserve our love.
Conclusion
- Jesus' display of love for the thief on the cross next to him should motivate us to celebrate diversity and reach out to others, regardless of their walks in life.
