Introduction:
  • Illustration: May opens with a lengthy description of the process of crucifixion.
  • Mark 15:20
  • Today I want us to look at three spiritual truths that are found in the story of Christ’s crucifixion; three lessons for meditation that will help us experience his healing presence in our lives.
Jesus couldn’t carry his own cross.
  • Mark 15:21
  • This unknown man—a man just like you and me—had to carry it for him.
  • Even though Jesus couldn’t carry his own cross, he’s the only one who can help you carry yours.
  • Hebrews 4:15
  • Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus could not save himself.
  • Mark 15:22-32
  • Illustration: May references typical scenes from modern day executions to demonstrate how there always have been those who gloat at others’ suffering, illustrating the cruelty of those that taunted Jesus to save himself.
  • Jesus was there, not because he was the victim of circumstances beyond his control, but because he chose to lay down his life for the sake of the world.
  • John 10:11, 17-18
  • Matthew 26:53
  • Jesus could not save himself because he wanted to save you.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
  • It wasn’t the nails that bound him to that tree; his love for you held him there.
Jesus experienced separation from God.
  • Mark 15:33-34
  • Isaiah 53:6
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21
  • Jesus experienced separation from God so you can experience reconciliation with God.
  • Romans 2:21-22
Conclusion:
  • 1 Peter 2:24
  • Isaiah 53:5
  • Big Idea: The passion of Christ—his suffering and death—is our healing and our salvation.
  • John 19:30
  • Though his work is finished on the cross, his work is not finished in you.
