Right Smack in the Middle of Sin
by R. Larry Moyer
Text: John 8:1–11
Topic: What is God's response to our sin?
Big Idea: God desires to pardon us, not punish us.
Keywords: Christ, blood of; Forgiveness, divine; Guilt; Salvation; Shame; Sin
Introduction:
- We all dread being caught in the middle of doing something we know is wrong.
-Illustration: As children, Moyer and his sister were caught playing in paint.
- Each of us has been caught in the middle of doing something we know is wrong.
- We all know we will one day stand before God, accountable for all we have done.
- How would God respond if he caught us in the middle of sin?
- The question is answered in the story of a woman brought before Christ.
Sin is embarrassing.
- Jesus always had a crowd around him, so the woman brought before him was brought before a crowd.
- She had been caught in the act of adultery.
- God has given each of us a conscience; we know when we do wrong.
- Can you imagine how embarrassed the woman must have been?
Sin is self-indicting.
- The woman's accusers were even dirtier than she was.
- The accusers' sins were revealed through their accusation of another.
- Accusers can be caught red-handed, too.
-Illustration: An attorney discovered a murderess after asking her what her husband's last words were.
We are all sinners.
- Jesus declared that he who was without sin could throw the first stone.
-Illustration: A man cleverly outwits a deceitful hotel manager.
- Jesus' response forced the accusers and the audience to face their sin.
- God is a holy God, and none of us can meet his standard of perfection.
- Even when we think of ourselves as better than others, we are only the best of the worst.
- If we knew others as they know themselves, no one would talk to anyone.
God is passionate to save us from sin.
- Jesus did not condemn the woman—he told her to "go and sin no more."
- God knows we will inevitably fail in our attempts to be holy.
- The God who has a perfect right to condemn us is the God who has a passionate desire to save us.
-Illustration: A car thief was fleeing from the police who were trying to save him—the stolen car contained poisoned crackers.
Christ's death is big enough to cover our sin.
- The punishment for all our sin was taken on the cross.
- Illustration: A girl couldn't keep her brother and sister from freezing to death because her coat was not big enough.
- Christ's blood is big enough to cover any sin and all sin.
- The only way to heaven is through recognizing our sin and trusting in Christ's atonement.
Conclusion
- God knows everything about you and still desires to save you.
- Illustration: A poor widow did not answer the door when a man tried to bring her rent money because she thought it was the landlord coming to evict her.
- Those who go to hell will go there of their own volition.
- Because of Christ's death, God can pardon all—will you let him pardon you?
