Passing the Test
by John Ortberg
Text: Matthew 15:21-28
Topic: How Jesus tests us
Big Idea: Jesus sometimes tests us in order to teach us.
Keywords: Endurance; Love; Testing; Teaching
Jesus is a master teacher.
- He aims not just to dispense information but to change lives by creating experiences for people.
- He knows that truth discovered has a deeper impact on people than truth merely presented.
- He is able to teach more than one group of people at a time.
- His methods are not always clear to his students at the time.
- Illustration: Ortberg tells the joke of a student who shows up for his ornithology test to find 25 pictures of birds’ feet on the board, which the class is to identify. He tells his teacher he won’t take the bizarre test, and when the teacher tells him that has failed and asks for his pupil’s name, the student rolls his pants up and says, “You tell me.”
Jesus teaches his disciples and the Canaanite woman by testing them.
- When the woman begs him to heal her demon-possessed daughter, Jesus is silent, to test whether she trusts him and wants healing for her daughter badly enough.
- Matthew 15:22-23
- Jesus ignores the woman and pretends to agree with the disciples’ pleas to send her away, to see what his disciples will do.
- Matthew 15:23
- The woman has nowhere else to go and cries, “Lord, help me!” thereby passing her test.
- Matthew 15:25
- The disciples do not say anything to defend her and fail their test.
Jesus is giving some of you the love test he gave his disciples.
- Some of you may have someone in your life whom you have a hard time loving.
- Illustration: In this lengthy illustration, Ortberg tells the story of a crippled boy at camp named Billy, whom the other campers taunted. But when he gave a devotional on Jesus’ love for him, he sparked a revival among those who had teased him.
Jesus is giving some of you the endurance test he gave the Canaanite woman.
- Some of you may have something difficult going on in your life, and you don’t understand why God is being silent.
- Illustration: Ortberg questions why his late neighbor, who was gregarious and a wonderful father, had a massive heart attack and died. He then reminds us that there is a choice between hope and despair, and Christ tells us to choose hope.
- Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith is great. Your request is granted”, and he healed her daughter.
