Introduction: “I can’t run from God any more.”
-Illustration: Thompson tells the story of John Claypool, who confessed to Thompson that he committed two murders 20 years ago for which he’d never been caught. He wanted to find peace in his life through confession, even if it meant incarceration. John surrendered to authorities and pled guilty to two counts of second degree murder.
God has made a way for the worst of sinners.
  • Christ makes us “without blemish and free from accusation” (Col. 1:21-22).
  • If we hold to Christ’s teaching, “the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).
Blessed is he whose sins are forgiven.
  • Claypool has finally been set free of the power of his secret.
  • When God exposes our secrets, he does it because he loves us.
God saps our strength if we keep our sin secret.
  • David could’ve kept his secret. No one knew. Except God.
  • Claypool could’ve kept his secret too. But God would not let him rest.
  • Our secret sins are like the ancient mariner’s albatross around his neck.
Do you have a secret?
  • That secret will rule your life ruthlessly and ruin it.
  • The worst thing we fear is the best thing God can do for us.
  • When David’s secret burst into the light, the truth set him free.
  • Salvation comes not because sinners feel sorrow, but because Christ reconciles us to himself.
What happens when God forgives?
  • God will “protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
  • When the secret is knows, the one we feared most becomes our protector.
Conclusion: As long as you’re running from God, your spirit finds no rest.
  • Are you tyrannized by a secret? Confess to God your secret and let him lead you in the process of healing.
